Congratulations Carl, Sarah and FranCongratulations to members; Carl Farmer, Sarah Murphy and Fran Byrne; on their success at the recent sitting of the IPF distinctions held in the Tipperary Institute, Thurles. Carl received the associate distinction (AIPF) for his panel of carnival freak show inspired portraits, and Sarah and Fran were awarded the licenciate distinction (LIPF) for their work. The Panels
Figure 2. Carl Farmer's panel. (Click image to view larger in new window) Artist statement: Since the early 1800’s there have been side shows to the main event in the big top circus. As time progressed into the Victorian age these became known as ‘Freak Shows’.
In my panel I wanted to bring a modern twist to the shows that captured the imagination of millions. I have endeavoured to recreate some of the biggest acts to tour the world though the early 19th century with the help of Models, Makeup Artists and lighting.
In my ‘Freak Show’ you will find, a Bearded Lady, an Escapologist, a Sword Swallower, Siamese twins, a Tattooed lady, a Contortionist, a He/She and many more.
I have taken inspiration from the signed greeting cards that each act would sell after their show depicting them in their chosen performance. Through the use of lighting and a stage, I hope that I have brought some of these forgotten acts back to life. The stage, set and lighting were all recreated in the studio, and where possible real props were used instead of post processing.
