Club Outing – Grand Canal Basin
Our next outing is to Grand Canal Dock, also known as Silicon Docks.
The dock consists of two basins, the larger one at Hanover Quay/Grand Canal Square and the inner basin at Bolands Mills which is smaller and quieter. Both are cut from reclaimed land, a project which started in 1717 and finished in 1796. The area then became a base for the dockside industry, including glass bottle making, coal manufacturing and milling.
Nowadays the area is home to a number of leading international companies and is a hub of modern apartments and office towers as well as being home to the Bord Gais Energy Theatre.
There is a wealth of photographic opportunities in the area including; street photography, architectural photography and the derelict remains of an old ship (MV Naohm Eanna) which ferried people to and from the Aran Islands. Near the ship is an impressive graffiti wall, and of course there are plenty of options for coffee afterwards.
We’ll meet at 10.00am at Grand Canal Square.
