The first recorded, and now legendary Steeplechase match, took place from Buttevant Church to St. Mary’s Church, Doneraile, in Cork in 1752. The riders raced from the steeple in one church to the steeple in the second church.
This has developed into the professional ranks with Cheltenham as its principal meeting but the largely amateur riders participate in local ‘point to point’ races across farmland on which a racecourse has been laid out.
Thus on 11th October 7 members travelled down to the Shilellagh Foxhounds Point to Point in Tinahely, County Wicklow. The weather was dry and, as usual, we had access to all areas to pursue our hobby. A great day was enjoyed by all.
