Club Outing – Autumn in Devil’s Glen

14 October 2024 | Club Outings

On 12th October the weekend outing was to the Devil’s Glen to sample the autumn colours of the Wicklow hillsides. On Saturday morning 18 members assembled at the car park in bright but cool sunshine. Despite the promise of colour, it was perhaps a week or two early for the full auburn showing in the foliage, nevertheless, the Devil’s Glen is a place of beauty and rest at any time of the year with the famed Seamus Heaney Walk as a centre piece.

Groups of us departed on various trails and directions but somehow we all seemed to reconvene on the main Red trail towards the waterfall. The trail was high on the edge of the valley with river Vartry far below. As we ventured along the winding path, it became clear that the scenery was evolving. The leaves on the trees were just beginning to turn, with shades of gold, orange, and red peeking through the predominantly green foliage. Many of us found interest in foreground and macro photography of berried trees, translucent leaves ferns, mosses and the occasional mushroom. Rivulets coming down the mountain side formed cameo waterfalls as a precursor the main waterfall at the valley head.

The Devil’s Glen Waterfall is a picturesque natural feature nestled in the scenic landscape and was a captivating destination for photographers.
After a few of hours of further exploration on the return trail we began to call it a day and make direct tracks back to the car park. We had covered about 6 km in the day. Back at the Hen & Hog in nearby Ashford we settled into tea and coffee, feeling justified, tucking into our scones and cake. A fabulous morning out.
