Club Outing – Kilkenny

11 April 2025 | Club Outings

The OffShoot Outings Committee couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day than last Saturday, 5th April as we explored the beautiful City of Kilkenny; a city steeped in history, culture, and undeniable charm. Nestled in the heart of Ireland, Kilkenny boasts a tapestry of narrow and dark cobblestone streets, medieval architecture, and lush landscapes that make it a photographer’s paradise.

Our planned rendez-vous was at the lovely Arán Bakery in Barrack Street for a cuppa to revive us after the journey down and a chance to discuss a plan of action. We headed to the High Street to get the well-known and picturesque Butter Slip Archway dated from the early 17th Century with its arched entry and dark walkway connecting High St with St Kieran’s St. it is lined with colourfully painted bars, antique shops & the quaint Italian Petronella restaurant which makes it an Instagram hotspot.

We moved up the street hoping to photograph the famous colourful sky of umbrellas at the entrance to Market Cross Shopping Centre but unfortunately, they weren’t in place on this occasion.

One group headed for the majestic Kilkenny Castle beside the river Nore. Built in the twelfth century it was the seat of the Butlers, Dukes of Ormond for 600 years. With its imposing turrets, landscaped gardens, and tranquil river views, the castle provides endless opportunities for stunning images.

Another couple tackled the very steep climb of 121 steps to the top of the Round Tower at St Canice’s Cathedral which gives Kilkenny its name Cill Chainnigh: The Church of Canice. This 1000-year-old Round Tower is only one of two that can be climbed and our reward for reaching the top were panoramic views of this medieval city on a cloudless sunny afternoon.

Back down to earth again as we rambled through the lovely streets and made our way to the pedestrian Lady Dysart Bridge, adorned with many love padlocks. From here, you get great views of the Castle and its reflection on the River Nore. Moving along by Johns Quays we discovered the quaint Edwardian Library and further on, a reminder that Kilkenny is the home of the Smithwick’s Brewery and of course, many famous hurling legends.

Across the road, another coffee shop “Brewtaly” served lovely teas and coffees to fuel us before we headed home.
