Club Outing – The Church Cafe Bar

28 October 2024 | Club Outings

On Tuesday 22nd October 9 members gathered in The Church Café Bar, Jervis Street at 9.30am. They open at 10.30am but had agreed that we could take photos beforehand. We were met by Darren who told us about the history of this fascinating listed building.

The first galleried church in Dublin, St Mary’s (as it was originally known) was completed in the early 1700s. Arthur Guinness was married in the church in 1761. At one end of the building is a large stained-glass window, while at the other is an organ which was played by George Frederick Handel when he lived nearby.

We had plenty of time to wander around the building with our tripods, before being treated to tea and coffee in the bar. We were all surprised by how big the church is, there is a basement level which isn’t immediately visible. Apparently, they are licensed to hold up to 1600 people. It was a great opportunity to see inside an amazing building and it was also great to hear that business is good so hopefully they will be open for a long time to come.
