Didn't post that many of my Namibia photos from last May here at the time as I was waiting until I'd done a presentation at my camera club. Will get round to posting a few of my favourites now over the next while. This is definitely a favourite from the visit to the amazing abandoned diamond mining town of Kolmanskop. I went back to this building a couple of times as I had nice shots from the first visit but nothing that stood out. On this occasion was lucky to get the light just as it was shining on the door.

The Bath
Reworking of an old photo from Kolmanskop in Namibia, that I originally posted more than a decade ago.
This post was inspired by Richard Boyle's photos which he took last year and showed at an OffShoot meeting last night.
Richard's photos of Kolmanskop are much better, by the way!
"In 1908 the worker Zacharias Lewala found a diamond while working in this area and showed it to his supervisor, the German railway inspector August Stauch. Realizing the area was rich in diamonds, German miners began settlement, and soon after the German government declared a large area as a 'Sperrgebiet', starting to exploit the diamond field.
Driven by the enormous wealth of the first diamond miners, the residents built the village in the architectural style of a German town, with amenities and institutions including a hospital, ballroom, power station, school, skittle-alley, theatre and sport-hall, casino, ice factory and the first x-ray-station in the southern hemisphere, as well as the first tram in Africa. It had a railway link to Lüderitz."

Silk Mill
The old silk mill on the banks of the Derwent in central Derby.
John Lombe's silk mill has a reasonable claim to be the first mechanised textile factory, bringing all the processes of preparing silk yarn under a single roof, with a mechanical power supply, an organised workforce and regular working hours. The mill opened in 1720, but much of the present building dates from the early twentieth century, being rebuilt following a fire in 1910, with just the core of the eighteenth century mill being preserved. Housing Derby's Museum of Making, it now has UNESCO world heritage status as the southern point of the Derwent Valley Mills site.
An 850nm infrared image, put through the Wet Rocks filter in Nik Silver Efex, with an Ilford Pan F simulation and a virtual selenium tone.
