Next Monday Night

This Monday’s meeting is another practical night. We’ll be doing a comparison of edited images, organised by John Wiles. It’s also hand-in for Competition #5 (Theme – Autumn Colours, Printed).

And before that, tomorrow (Sunday) we have an outing to the point-to-point at Fairwood, Tinahely. This is horses racing over fences across fields. Facilities are basic but there is access to all areas – well almost. It is likely to be quite muddy which makes for good shots.

The first of six races is at 12:30. The journey will take you just over 1½ hours and when you get to Tinahely the course will be advertised. (https://www.p2p.ie/fixtures.php)

We will meet either at the course (52°46’40.8″N 6°28’25.3″W) at 12 noon or 11:00 at Murphy’s hotel in Dwyer Square, Tinahely.

You will need a telephoto lens preferably with a minimum of 70-200mm and a general purpose lens for saddling/enclosure/punters. A monopod will help and raingear, warm clothing and a pair of stout shoes or boots. Bring a change of footwear!

Competition

The 19th November is hand in date for the next OffShoot competition. The theme for level 1 and level 2 is ‘Autumn colours’.   If you are level 3 you should start mulling over your ‘selects’. Not to over complicate things, there is no mono competition for level 1 and level 2, but you can put up to 2 images into the colour competition.

The judge for this competition will be Gerry Andrews. His work can be seen at www.gerryandrews.com. Judging will be on 26th November.

AGM & 2019 Committee

Just a reminder that due to the new constitution adopted at the beginning of 2018 that the AGM now takes place in December. This year the AGM is scheduled for 3rd December 2018. We will be sending out an official notice of this and an agenda shortly.

It is normal at the AGM that we appoint the members of the 2019 committee. The details of the elected members required can be found in the constitution linked to above.

We encourage members to become involved in the committee and would suggest that even if you don't want to be the main committee member that you join one of the subcommittees like IPF, Outings, Competition, Door or New Members.

If you're interested in helping or joining the committee please either email secretary@offshoot.ie or speak to Ian (Chair) or Russell (Secretary) at the next meeting.

IPF National Shield Competition
This competition takes place in Pobal Scoil Iosolde, Palmerstown Dublin 20 on Sunday 18th of November.  Details of the programe for the day can be found at this link. Members are welcome to attend.

Offaly County Council Winter Photo Competition.
Offaly Tourism Marketing (CLG) is delighted to announce our Winter Photo Competition, allowing the public to show off the best sites Offaly has to offer. As most people carry a phone or tablet with them in their daily routine, so the chance to take an inspired snap is always just a click/ a snap away. We are calling on the people and visitors to Offaly to show us your favourite place in the county. That may be a locals scenic view from the back yard or a day trippers Sunday stroll along a woodland path. Get out and show off what we have here to offer.
All you have to do is to take the snap and send it to Visit Offaly via email or our social media channels by using the #offalywinter. We will collect and select a shortlist that will then be posted via our website and social media, allowing the public to select a winner.

Exhibitions & Events
Dublin Salt (Peter Gordon) exhibition

Dublin Salt has been a three-year journey through the capital’s salty perimeters by local photographic artist Peter Gordon. Despite travelling the world with his landscape photography, Peter has felt most inspired in his own backyard, Dublin Bay. From Skerries to Shankill and everything in between he searched for the perfect light, just the right tide, unique conditions, in an attempt to make a landmark collection of Dublin landscapes. Images will be printed up to 1.5 metres so it should be an occasion not to be missed.

At Studio 10 Dublin, 10 Wicklow Street, Dublin 2. From 8th November until 19th November. Opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm and Sunday from 11am to 4pm.

Photo Quiz Answer
A.  DNG is also considered to be a RAW image file. It is Adobe’s proprietary image standard that was created to store image data in a generic, highly-compatible format, unlike RAW files that have specific formats based on manufacturer and camera type. Although DNG was invented by Adobe and is supported in all Adobe applications, there are other camera manufacturers such as Leica, Hasselblad and Pentax that adopted this standard and use it in their cameras as their native and supported RAW file format.
