IPF AV 2019
The next event organised by the Irish Photographic Federation is the IPF National Audio Visual Championships.
AV2019 takes place in Aras Chronain Irish Cultural Centre, Watery Lane, Clondalkin, Dublin 22 on Saturday, 19th & Sunday, 20th October 2019. Our judges from England are Howard Bagshaw, ARPS, MPAGB, who will be judging for the first time and Ron Davies, FRPS, FIPF, EFIAP, FACI (M), who judged many years ago in Mallow in the analogue days! There will be a meal on the Saturday night nearby and it is also usual for the committee, judges and others to meet up on the Friday night for dinner and also on the Sunday after the event.
There is an admission charge for non-entrants to the event - as is usual for AV festivals worldwide - €8.00 per session, €12.00 per day or €20.00 for the weekend. Soup and sandwiches at €5.00 are available each day for lunch and there is tea/coffee on arrival.
This year we will be starting a half an hour earlier so registration will be from 9 a.m., with a prompt start at 10 a.m., on both days. There will be comfort breaks as well as for lunch each day. The competition will continue on the Sunday morning and afternoon and will conclude with the presentation of awards.
This is the 37th IPF National Audio Visual Championships and the 10th year to be held in Aras Chronain. Also this year we are hosting the 7th International AV Competition. Sequences are now in - and there are entries in each of the national categories - Novice, Intermediate, Club & Advanced representing 5 camera clubs/societies. In the International section there are entries from South Africa, Australia & New Zealand, Italy, Norway, Netherlands & Slovak Republic, England & Wales and Ireland north and south!
Though the weekend hosts two competitions, it is a very sociable occasion. I would encourage any who have not experienced Audio Visual - this specialised branch of photography - to come along. Of course, the committee look forward to seeing all our regular friends and entrants especially those travelling across the Irish Sea and across the border as well!
‘Quiet at the Back’ Mandy O’Neill
At the Gallery of Photography until 27th October. For over a decade, award-winning photographer Mandy O’Neill has engaged with children and young people in formal education contexts in primary and post-primary schools in central Dublin.
O’Neill’s photographs have emerged through a mix of formal residencies supported by the Arts Council of Ireland and more local arrangements in keeping with the dynamics of school life from year to year.
Clann: Theresa Nanigian
In the Lexicon Library, Dun Laoghaire until 17 November. ‘Clann’, a spirited portrait of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County, is a series of large scale photographs of groups who live, work and play in the county. The work reflects the fact that Irish clans have long been composed of members far beyond blood relations, and demonstrates the cultural shifts in what the county has become and where it might be headed. Nanigian was awarded the visual art commission for 2018/19, funded by the Arts Council.
