OffShoot Photography Society We believe that the image is everything!

6th March 2021

News

Those of us who joined the zoom meeting last Monday learned all about the Cake Smash and its role in child photography thanks to Nicole Whyte.

Next Monday Night

Next Monday evening we turn to landscape photography with a presentation by Harry Wheeler-Brand. Harry is lined up as the judge for our next club competition (see details below) so his presentation should give us an insight into his artistic approach.

Well Done to Barry Dillon!

Barry was nominated for Photographer of the Year in Architecture by the Societies. While not the ultimate winner, it is a great achievement to be one of the three nominees.

What do we all look like?

Having all gone virtual we miss the personal interaction and sometimes it’s difficult to fit a face to a name?

We have 5 new entries to the Mug's Gallery this week.

We have finally got to present the way forward on this idea. Please check out the page at https://www.offshoot.ie/our-members/.

We invite all that have not previously submitted an entry to complete the form at the bottom of the page and add your mug to the gallery. (If you choose to keep your details and image private it will require the members to be logged in to see them.)

Learn With Me (LWM)

In our recent survey, some members expressed an interest in learning basic camera settings and now is your chance.

It is proposed to run a couple of short interactive sessions for those who shoot in AUTO because they are unsure how to or why to use other settings. There will be a blend of theory and practice – and no question will remain unanswered no matter how basic!

If you think you would benefit from such a session, please contact David Sisk (lwm@offshoot.ie) to arrange some dates to suit. Because of the interactive nature of the proposed sessions, it will be necessary to keep numbers low, but we will do our best to fit everyone in.

LIPF Preparation

Over the past months, several OffShoot members have been preparing panels with the aim of applying for a LIPF Distinction whenever applications reopen. Deirdre Irwin organised and set up three Zoom sessions to advise applicants of the processes involved in producing a successful panel and the key requirements that judges look for.

Steve Crozier gave an excellent Zoom presentation on preparing images and a Panel for printing. Steve emphasised the importance of having a coherent set of images that ‘worked’ as a Panel.

Over two Zoom sessions Michael O’Sullivan commented in detail on more than 200 images sent to him for critique, advice and recommendations. He was very patient and so generous with his time and advice.

Of course, none of this would have happened without Deirdre’s considerable organisation skills in arranging and hosting all the Zoom sessions. All the participants owe a considerable debt of gratitude to all three of the above.

Accessing Video Recordings of Meetings

The video from last Monday's session on Baby and Maternity photography is now in the Members Area to be accessed.

You can access this and other recordings of past Zoom meetings in the Videos section of the Member's Area at https://www.offshoot.ie/member-area/. You will need to login to the website to see the content of this section of the site.

Every member has a login to the site. If you don't remember your login details go to https://www.offshoot.ie/login/ and select the 'Forgot your password?' link. Enter the email address you received this newsletter with and reset your password. Once you've reset your password you can log in and catch-up on speakers you missed. Happy catching up!

This Weekly's Flickr Project: Tabletop/Product Photography

Once again you can do this without leaving the house. Your model can be anything that fits on a table or similar sized surface. Google "still life" or "product photography"  to get ideas for subjects and composition ideas.

Backgrounds of white or black card will help set the tone and window light, perhaps the use of a reflector will give good results. If using window light use a tripod as you can set a slow shutter and your subject won't move. If you want to use a flash soften it by placing a tissue over it.
