Last Monday we all enjoyed an entertaining and interesting presentation by Joe Houghton on Street Photography – much of it based on works from his book “Streets of Dublin”

Next Monday Night

For something completely different, tune in next Monday evening for a presentation by Alan Walls on macro under the title of “Macro Photography with What You Have in the Bag”

Street Photography

After  Joe Houghton's Monday night presentation it will be your turn to go out and practice. Street photography can be both challenging and at the same time one of the most rewarding genres of photography. It means candid, unposed photos of people and it’s not easy – it requires patience, hard work, and sometimes even some bravery to be able to approach and photograph complete strangers.

We’re not lawyers but generally speaking taking photographs in open public spaces is legal whereas inside a shop is not. It’s all about a reasonable expectation of privacy and respect. If someone doesn’t want their picture taken respect their wishes. The streets are full of interesting people, and another is sure to come along shortly. The ethics of photographing children and the homeless is difficult and probably best avoided.

Keep taking pictures and on 19th July we’ll show your street images This is not a competition but a good way to get out and shoot people! Please submit your images, by midnight on Wednesday 14th July.

This Week's Flickr Theme

This week's theme is the last of the Summer. We will be taking a break and look to restart in early October. To keep you going, if you wish to keep going, we've listed a couple of ideas for themes at the bottom of this section.

The last theme until October is listed below.

Chiaroscuro

Chiaroscuro is an Italian term, made from two words – chiaro meaning bright or clear and scuro meaning dark or obscure. So, put simply, you could say the definition of chiaroscuro is ‘light/dark’.

In photography, the chiaroscuro lighting technique can be defined simply as high contrast lighting. You use the extremes of dark and light to create an arresting image.

It can be used in colour or black and white photography.

Frequently chiaroscuro images have a mainly dark background with areas of the subject brightly lit.

The lighting arrangement also creates the illusion of depth and planes in the image. It is often used for moody portraits and still life, food and fine art shots.

Club Competitions

Our next competition is called "Anything Man-Made". From a screw to a skyscraper, from a ball to a bucket or a hamburger to a house, just about anything can become a subject for anything man-made so you can interpret the theme as broadly as you like.

You can use almost any lens from a Macro to a Zoom so there’s something for everybody.

Our Judge for this competition is Iñaki Hernandez-Lasa (FRPS-FIPF-AFIAP). Please see his website below.

http://ihlphotography.com

For this competition, we have to limit the number of entries to 2 per member, to make sure that everybody receives useful feedback, and that the judge gets finished at a reasonable hour!

Please submit your images, by midnight Sunday 18th July 2021.  Judging will take place, on Monday 26th July 2021.
