News

Last Monday Night

Last week we had a really enjoyable evening with a quiz night on Zoom. It retained that element of fun and we still had a bit of “Zoom socialising”. It all sounds easy but with things being as they are the technology necessarily made the quiz just that bit more challenging. Thanks are due to Ian Gemmell and Joe Tulie who really pulled out the stops to make this happen.

Next Monday Night

Next week we have a talk by Patrick Donald entitled ‘Why make pictures for yourself first and foremost, what is their purpose thereafter, and why black and white pictures can give a truer feeling in the end print’. I think that this is the longest title of any of our talks but it encompasses our own question – why do we make pictures? Have a look at his website https://patrickdonald.com/ and get a preview of the treat we have in store.

IPF National Shield Autumn 2021

Thank you all for your submissions, which are now being evaluated by our IPF Committee.

Congratulations

Congratulations and well done to Liam Haines who has  received a Highly Commended and FIAP ribbon from the RPS International AV Festival.

Member Survey

Thanks to everyone who submitted their response to the recent Members Survey.  We have had some very valuable feedback. The results are now being reviewed and a summary will be published shortly.

The survey requesting your views on returning to physical meetings was most interesting. Just over 50% of respondents were willing to go back to physical meetings and it would be odd if that were not so, since the aspiration of any club is to meet and share a common interest. But there were words of caution which must be acknowledged: the difficulty in predicting the development of Covid, declining efficacy of vaccinations, infection of vaccinated people, another probable surge after Christmas, possibility of new variants etc.  Whilst respondents are generally happy with virtual meetings, we need more evidence of progress in suppressing the pandemic.

The committee’s obligation is to ensure the safety of members and whatever the government’s ‘plan’ will be Offshoot must implement its own protocols.

Chat Moderators Still Wanted

As most of you will know, Noreen, Marie and Richard have been doing the Zoom chat moderation since we went to virtual club meetings. They are happy to continue this role, but it would be good to get one or two other members involved to share out the rota. The work involved is minimal so put your name forward please email secretary@offshoot.ie

OffShoot Succession

We asked you for volunteers to serve on the committee in 2022. Sadly, the response has been disappointing.

OffShoot is a thriving club and our members are a great bunch of people and we want to look to the future and develop. This is your camera club and we have all sorts of roles; committees, subcommittees etc.; something for everybody willing to help. Everybody is important and it’s up to you how you want to help.

Membership of the committee is not only essential for the good governance and development of Offshoot – it can also be fun!

Please indicate your interest to committee@offshoot.ie.

Outings

Outings are a great way to socialise with fellow members, visit new places and even take some photographs so do come and join us.

However, registration for Outings will be continued to facilitate contact tracing in the event that we experience a Covid outbreak within the group.

Thoughts for today

“Photography is the art of making memories tangible.”

“It is an illusion that photos are made with the camera… they are made with the eye, heart, and head.”
- Henri Cartier-Bresson

“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place…”

Club Competitions

Our next and final competition of the year is called "Autumn Colours”

You can interpret the theme as you wish from falling leaf colour, portraits in the landscape, shooting low down to capture fungi and other natural wonders, or wide angle to capture a more expansive landscape.   The possibilities are endless so use your imagination and experiment.   You can use almost any lens from a Macro to a Zoom so there’s something for everybody.

Our Judges for this competition are Eamon and Christine O’ Daly from The Outdoor Studio.
