News

Last Monday Night

Last week we had the judging of our last competition of the year "Autumn Colours” by Christine and Eamon O’Daly of the Outdoor Studio Skerries (www.outdoorstudio.ie). Congratulations not only to the winning and highly commended photographers but also to all who submitted images. It was the largest competition of 2021 and a credit to all; well done.

Next Monday Night

Next week is the AGM of Offshoot. This is a really important date in our calendar as it determines what you, the members, want for 2022. Offshoot is a thriving club and our members are a great bunch of people and we want to look to the future and develop. This is your camera club and we need help. We have all sorts of roles; committees, subcommittees etc.; something for everybody and without that help many of the activities, outings and SWM will not be possible.

Everybody is important and it’s up to you so, please come to the AGM, take part in the election and remember that it is not what Offshoot can do for you that is as important as what you can do for Offshoot.

Outings

Outings are a great way to socialise with fellow members, visit new places and even take some photographs so do come and join us.

Look at the schedule at the end of this Newsletter for Outings…

Please note that registration for Outings will be continued to facilitate contact tracing in the event that we experience a Covid outbreak with the group.

Special Outing – Portrait Masterclass

This is special because it’s indoors! Last Sunday was the first of our Portrait Masterclasses. Aimed at those who wanted learn more about this most fascinating of genres Richard Byrne and Paul Frazer gave us a most enjoyable and instructive afternoon with two beautiful models Jade and Bella.

This is an afternoon for beginners in the art of portraiture in a fully equipped studio with models. On the afternoon of 22 January 2022 – it’s a Saturday – we will repeat the course and the number of attendees is limited to 10.

This session is filling up quickly so get your name on the list by emailing outings@offshoot.ie now.

Thoughts for today

“If you are out there shooting, things will happen for you. If you’re not out there, you’ll only hear about it.”
Jay Maisel

“If you can’t feel what you’re looking at, then you’re never going to get others to feel anything when they look at your pictures.”
Don McCullin

“I go and get the camera and do it. Photography is a medium in which if you don’t do it then, very often you don’t do it at all, because it doesn’t happen twice.”
Paul Strand

Club Competitions

To give you some advanced warning, the first Club Competition for 2022 will be an Open Theme competition for Monochrome images. The entry date will be in late January – full details to follow in due course.

This Week's Flickr Theme

For those who may not have engaged with this yet here's how it works. Each week a theme/topic is set.

During the week you shoot or process an image in that theme. and load it on the Flickr site. One image will be selected as the "theme pic of the week" and published in the following week's newsletter.

Why bother? The theme pic gives you an opportunity to explore and try out many different styles and types of photography. It increases the variety of images on our site and is an excellent opportunity to expand your creativity and photography skills and you get your picture in the weekly newsletter!

Please note this is not a competition. The image chosen each is selected to encourage and inspire us. It may be the most technical but could also be selected as the most unusual, the most creative, the funniest or the one that appealed to us the most. The pictures are selected by a different member of the team each week to ensure varied viewpoints.

This week's theme is "Dragging the Shutter"

While it might sound complicated, dragging the shutter is simply using a slower shutter speed than you normally would while using flash. This means combining flash and existing light to give a balanced exposure and get the best from both light sources. it can also be used to add selective blur to your image.

We look forward to seeing your images. Don't forget to label your images on Flickr with the theme name.
