News

Next Monday Night

Renowned street photographer Brian Lloyd Duckett will be talking to us about street photography, one of his videos has been included below in the newsletter.

Last Monday Night

Last Monday night Club member Liam Haines got us thinking about what settings were used in a variety of images and what impact those images had on us. Hopefully, we all took something away from a fascinating presentation.

Return to Physical Meetings

The committee can confirm that we will be having our first physical meeting post-pandemic on 4th April in St Brigid’s School.

Documents

We have updated the document section of the website to include informative documents created by Club members Trevor Stafford, Andy Quinlan as well as Neil McShane, our black & white guest speaker from earlier this year.

Our Club Exhibition is Back

The Annual Club Exhibition will return this year and will be held in the DLR Lexicon over 6 weeks commencing 12th July 2022. You may now submit your images for the exhibition  via this dropbox link:

https://www.dropbox.com/request/QiiYhKLD9LcFcbXbSfeD

The closing date for submission of images is 30th April – so now is a great time to start looking through your images to find something you might like to submit or go and shoot something new if you wish. It is likely that we will be able to accommodate two images from each member.

The launch party has now been booked for the first night of the exhibition (12th July) in Hardys Bar in the Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoghaire – so put the date in your calendar now!

The Theme of the Week

This week's theme is Night Photography

You will probably need to use high iso, long shutter speed and wide apertures. A tripod will be needed if you are shooting shutter speeds lower than 1/30th of a second and a remote release will be useful too. possible subjects are star trails, traffic trails, floodlit buildings etc.
Street and portrait shots are also possible if there is enough artificial light around. Be careful and have fun.

Next Club Competition – “Abstract”

Our next competition will be under the theme of ‘Abstract’.

According to Wikipedia, Abstract Photography, sometimes called non-objective, experimental or conceptual photography, is a way of depicting a visual image that does not have an immediate association with the object world and that has been created through the use of camera equipment, processes or materials. An abstract photograph may isolate a fragment of a natural scene in order to remove the inherent context from the viewer, it may be purposely staged to create a seemingly unreal appearance from real objects or it may involve the use of colour, light, shadow, texture, shape and/or form to convey feeling, sensation or impression.

However there has never been an exact definition of what exactly “abstract photography” is: similar to abstract art, it offers many different ways of looking at a subject. There are no rules and so abstract photography is exactly what the viewer makes of it, and it can hold many different interpretations, views and opinions.

You can interpret the theme as you wish from landscapes to people and anything in between. We are looking forward to seeing the different interpretations.
