IPF National Club Competition
National club competition Saturday May 21st.
Many thanks to all members that have uploaded images to the IPF national club competition dropbox link: https://www.dropbox.com/request/Gc8m8ftOr4yZpC9aa5oy
We need more images from our members to be able to enter a colour and black and white panel. So if you haven’t already do so, please upload up to 5 colour and 5 black and white images as soon as possible please.
The images should be in jpg format, with approx. 2000 pixels on the long side and a maximum size of about 2mb named as follows:
999_MyPictureTitle.jpg
Replace 999 with your membership number. Please do not use your own name as part of the title, as the selection committee needs to review the images anonymously. Please do not use punctuation such as commas, apostrophes, or special characters. Please avoid using spaces. You can use a Capital letter to identify the beginning of a Word (e.g., My Picture Title becomes MyPictureTitle).
Last Monday Night
Well done and thank you to Kazi Ushioda for his excellent presentation on Intentional Camera Movement photography last Monday night. He has certainly inspired many of us to have a go at the technique – but most of us will struggle to produce such fabulous results!
Our First Physical Meeting – Monday 04 April
Plans are now well advanced to hold our first post Covid physical meeting in St Bridget’s School on Monday 04 April at 8pm.
It is intended that this first meeting will have a significant social element to it as we all get to see our colleagues and friends after a break of over two years.
So the plan is to have a Show and Tell Meeting. The idea is that each of us will bring along a few printed images and talk about them with a group of our colleagues: you could tell about the location or occasion, or what inspired you to take the image or ask for some constructive feedback about the photograph. There is no intention that we bring along exhibition quality prints etc. You might print them yourself or go along to Harvey Norman or Fujifilm to get them done.
So we will have a bit of fun and we will spread ourselves out well to keep everyone as safe as we can – and of course you are more than welcome to wear a mask if you wish to do so!
Come along with your prints and enjoy the evening!
Ukraine Humanitarian Support
At our meeting on 04 April we are proposing to have a collection to support the humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. This is completely voluntary. But if you wish to contribute please bring along some cash – no card tapping facility available!
Our Club Exhibition is Back
The Annual Club Exhibition will return this year and will be held in the DLR Lexicon over 6 weeks commencing 12th July 2022. You may now submit your images for the exhibition via this dropbox link:
https://www.dropbox.com/request/QiiYhKLD9LcFcbXbSfeD
The closing date for submission of images is 30th April – so now is a great time to start looking through your images to find something you might like to submit or go and shoot something new if you wish. It is likely that we will be able to accommodate two images from each member.
The launch party has now been booked for the first night of the exhibition (12th July) in Hardys Bar in the Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoghaire – so put the date in your calendar now!
Welcome to our New Committee Members
There have been some changes on our committee in recent weeks.
At an EGM on 21 March, Jean Clarke was elected as our new Competition Secretary following the resignation of Katherine O’Boyle some weeks ago. Thanks to Katherine for her committee contribution and welcome to Jean to this important position.
Liam Slattery has agreed to take on the task of leading the Outings Sub-Committee after Mike Smith stepped down from the role. Thanks to Mike for his good work and indeed for his contribution to Offshoot over many years. Welcome to Liam – we look forward to a great programme of outings over the rest of the year.
IPF L Panels
Best of luck to Taryn Barling and Patrick Byrne with their L Panels at the IPF distinctions sittings on Saturday 26 March. We look forward to hearing the good news!
Car Boot Sale
We are proposing to have a “Car Boot Sale” at our meeting on Monday 09 May. So now is the time to get value for any surplus kit that you may have accumulated over the past few years.
To facilitate planning, please email Emily Gallagher with details of anything you would like to offer for sale with an indication of the price you hope to achieve for it.
The Theme of the Week
This week's theme is Panoramas.
Panoramas are created by taking a series of overlapping shots with the same exposure and focus. Focus your first shot for wide depth of field, set the exposure and then switch your camera to manual to keep all your shots standardised. It is helpful to have the camera mounted on a tripod as this makes it easier for the software to blend your shots together. Don't forget you can also shoot panoramas in a vertical direction for tall buildings, trees, waterfalls or landscapes with towering cloudscapes. When you have your group of shots many photo software programmes will automatically blend them together to create your panorama automatically. Usually all you need to do at the end is crop the shot to get a rectangular frame.
Another benefit of panoramas is they allow you to get very large sized images with lots of detail and a wider field of view than your widest lens. With a 50mm lens you could get the equivalent of a 12 mm lens and if your camera shoots 20 megapixel images you can now have 200 megapixel files for huge prints.
If you want to get an idea of how y0ur panorama will turn out most phones have a quick and simple panorama function where you click start, pan your phone across the view and click stop and the phone automatically creates the panorama.
