Next Monday Night
Next Monday evening we will be back in St Bridget’s School on at 8pm. After two years of Covid we now can meet and greet all the new members in person, renew acquaintance with old friends. It seems almost unbelievable that for two long years we have interacted as a club only on Zoom. Yes, we have met up on outings and Shoot With Me but as a total membership we have seen and spoken in a virtual medium.
SO, THIS FIRST MEETING WILL HAVE A SIGNIFICANT SOCIAL ELEMENT TO IT AS WE ALL GET TO SEE OUR FRIENDS AFTER TWO LONG YEARS.
But Covid is still amongst us and some members, quite reasonably, feel that for the sake of their own protection or that of a loved one they cannot be with us. Taryn Barling and Thilo Rusche will show us their successful LIP panels and all the notices and announcements will be facilitated on Zoom.
Then we plan to have a Show and Tell Meeting. The idea is that each of us will bring along a few printed images and talk about them with a group of our colleagues: you could talk about the location or occasion, or what inspired you to take the image, what settings you used or ask for some constructive feedback about the photograph. There is no intention that we bring along exhibition quality prints etc. You might print them yourself or go along to Harvey Norman or Fujifilm to get them done.
So we will have a bit of fun and spread ourselves out well to keep everyone as safe as we can – and of course you are more than welcome to wear a mask if you wish to do so!
Come along with your prints and enjoy the evening!
IPF National Club Competition
National club competition Saturday May 21st.
Many thanks to all members that have uploaded images to the IPF national club competition dropbox link: https://www.dropbox.com/request/Gc8m8ftOr4yZpC9aa5oy
We need more images from our members, but we need to make Friday 8th April the closing date for receiving images
The images should be in jpg format, with approx. 3000 pixels on the long side, named as follows:
999_MyPictureTitle.jpg
Replace 999 with your membership number. Please do not use your own name as part of the title, as the selection committee needs to review the images anonymously. Please do not use punctuation such as commas, apostrophes, or special characters. Please avoid using spaces. You can use a Capital letter to identify the beginning of a Word (e.g., My Picture Title becomes MyPictureTitle).
Last Monday Night
Last Monday evening James Crombie gave us an interesting and instructive evening on his excellent sports photography and his winning portfolios including his murmuration photo. But he is more than that; a photographer who creates images in every genre and, moreover, a charming and modest man with his many awards. It was interesting to hear how the prime photography spots in the Olympics are shared out amongst the various agencies. James' enthusiasm for his craft was inspirational.
Ukraine Humanitarian Support
At our meeting on 04 April we are proposing to have a collection to support the humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. This is completely voluntary. But if you wish to contribute please bring along some cash – no card tapping facility available!
Our Club Exhibition is Back
The Annual Club Exhibition will return this year and will be held in the DLR Lexicon over 6 weeks commencing 12th July 2022. You may now submit your images for the exhibition via this dropbox link:
https://www.dropbox.com/request/QiiYhKLD9LcFcbXbSfeD
The closing date for submission of images is 30th April – so now is a great time to start looking through your images to find something you might like to submit or go and shoot something new if you wish. It is likely that we will be able to accommodate two images from each member.
The launch party has now been booked for the first night of the exhibition (12th July) in Hardys Bar in the Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoghaire – so put the date in your calendar now!
Welcome to our New Committee Members
There have been some changes on our committee in recent weeks.
At an EGM on 21 March, Jean Clarke was elected as our new Competition Secretary following the resignation of Katherine O’Boyle some weeks ago. Thanks to Katherine for her committee contribution and welcome to Jean to this important position.
Liam Slattery has agreed to take on the task of leading the Outings Sub-Committee after Mike Smith stepped down from the role. Thanks to Mike for his good work and indeed for his contribution to Offshoot over many years. Welcome to Liam – we look forward to a great programme of outings over the rest of the year.
IPF L Panels
Congratulations to Taryn Barling and Thilo Rusche who were successful with their L Panels at the IPF distinctions sittings on Saturday 26th March. We look forward to seeing their panels on Monday evening.
Car Boot Sale
We are proposing to have a “Car Boot Sale” at our meeting on Monday 09 May. So now is the time to get value for any surplus kit that you may have accumulated over the past few years.
To facilitate planning, please email Emily Gallagher with details of anything you would like to offer for sale with an indication of the price you hope to achieve for it.
The Theme of the Week
This week's theme is Clothing, Costume or Fashion
So that's any photo with some person(s) or animal(s) wearing clothing. If you can't get a model shoot yourself in a mirror or just shoot the clothes as a still life! The clothing should provide some subject interest because of the colour, pattern, style, lighting etc. Here's a chance to play with your wardrobe.
