Next Monday evening Olive Gaughan will talk to us about Portrait Photography and share some tips and tricks. Olive is a long-standing member of Offshoot and an experienced and superb photographer. Her portraits are outstanding, and this meeting should be both interesting and informative.
This meeting will be a hybrid meeting with a remote joining Zoom option.

Our Club Exhibition is Back
The Annual Club Exhibition will return this year and will be held in the DLR Lexicon over 6 weeks commencing 12 July 2022. You may now submit your images for the exhibition via this Dropbox link:
https://www.dropbox.com/request/QiiYhKLD9LcFcbXBsfeD
The closing date for submission of images is 31 May – so now is a great time to start looking through your images to find something you might like to submit or go out and shoot something new if you wish. It is likely that we will be able to accommodate two images from each member.
The launch party has been booked for the first night of the exhibition (12 July) in Hardys Bar in the Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoghaire – so put the date in your calendar now!!
Next Club Competition – 'People in Images'
The theme of our next Club Competition is People in Images which you can interpret anyway you like as long as there is a person or people in the image. The person/people don’t have to be the subject but can be there for scale, perspective or of course the main subject. Images can be portraits, street, architecture, landscape, mono or colour – it is up to you to have fun with the theme!
For Level 2 and Level 3 the image must have been taken with a 35mm or 50mm full frame equivalent focal length.
For all levels, to encourage continuous improvement and to get members out taking photos, all images should have been taken within the last year.
As usual please save your images in JPEG format and name them with your Level Number, Membership Number and Image Title:
L2-001-Image title.jpg
This is a printed competition – so hand in will be on Monday 20 June at the club (school) - files to Steve for printing no later than 13 June (link will be published later).
The judging will be on Monday 27 June and the judge is Michelle La Grue from Malahide Camera Club (https://www.michellelagruephotography.com/)
Offshoot MSGs – Offshoot Minority Support Groups
These groups are for members of Offshoot who use post processing products other than Lightroom and Photoshop and for some of the less popular photographic equipment. We think that it might be useful for these members to have a way to find help and encourage them in their voyages through the seas of software, preferences and menu options.
Two weeks into the process we have found that all groups have useful, lively and spirited discussions.
Last week we told you of five groups already up and running and this week we are pleased to announce that Jérôme Fennell is setting up an Offshoot WhatsApp MSG group for Olympus users.
If you use an Olympus camera and would like to join the group please contact Jérôme at jeromefennell@fastmail.fm
John Wiles has set up 3 Groups:
OffshootMSG - Affinity Photo
OffshootMSG - Capture One
OffshootMSG - Fujifilm
To join please contact John at johnwiles44@gmail.com
Matt O’Brien has set up another group for Sony shooters: OffshootMSG-Sony
To join please contact Matt at m@ttobrien.com

- Let us know at secretary@offshoot.ie if you will be attending
The Theme of the Week
This week's theme is: In the woods or the Park
This is a good time of year to visit the woods/parks. The trees have new foliage. There are lots of late Spring/early Summer flowers in bloom. In wilder areas the dandelions are producing their seedheads. In parks with ponds the ducklings and cygnets have hatched. Try not to disturb them if taking shots. And there are lots of people using the parks at this time of year. Many parks have sporting events, particularly at the weekend. So there is no shortage of subjects.
For ideas search your local park in Google images or on Flickr.
Upcoming themes:
- A different view/vantage point
- Symmetry
Changes to Flickr?
Rob Hackett asks "Are you getting notifications from Flickr to tempt you to go for the Pro paid version?" If so, read on.
Flickr are now (amongst other restrictions) limiting the number of private images you have to 50. After May 17 they will begin removing them. If you want to keep them it may not be obvious how to find and change the privacy settings i.e. to public.
If you want to you can find your private photos and make them public by doing the following
- Click on the YOU menu and select Organize
- At the bottom of the screen there is a blue Search button, click on the right arrow for more options, this will bring up some more search choices
- Click the drop down menu option where it says No Privacy/SearchSafe filter, this will give you even more options
- Select Only show private content from the range of options - the photo thumbnails at the bottom of the screen will change to those which are your private images
- If you double click on an image a new window will popup - click on permissions, where it says Who can see this photo you can select Anyone (Public) and then save or delete as you wish
- You can then continue by double clicking on the next image. A quicker option is to tick the button to the right of save to move on to the next image before you click the save button to advance through your search list.
