We have the usual mix of cold and wet weather with maybe even a bit of snow on high ground. The temptation is to turn over in bed or wrap up warm and sit by the fireside with the camera resting idly by your side, unused and forgotten until the dawn of Spring. Oh, ye of little faith! Sunrise and sunset are at a more acceptable hour, and great images can be had in the rain and frost, and winter storms make for dramatic skies and seas. So, carry your camera with you and pretend it is just a colder summer’s day.
Last Monday
We went to Africa with Deirdre Irwin, who gave us a fabulous presentation on her trip to Botswana. The images were stunning, and we are indeed lucky to have Deirdre as a member of OffShoot.
Next Monday
Dan Sheridan will talk to us about action and sports photography. Dan covers everything from hurling to rugby, boxing to soccer and every stop in between. He is a professional sports photographer and a specialist in his field. Do come to the school to hear a true professional talk about his work.
Would you Consider Helping out on a Committee?
The constitution also permits the committee to create and co-opt members of the Society into sub-committees. Why is this important? In the past few newsletters, we have beseeched you to consider getting involved.
OffShoot is our club, and you can help influence how things happen. Like every social club, OffShoot doesn’t run on fresh air, and we always need new blood to keep things ticking over. So, if you would like to help out, please reach out to a member of the committee, and your offer, however small, will be most welcome.
We badly need a liaison officer between ourselves and the Irish Photographic Federation. The main role of this position is to keep contact between OffShoot and the IPF and, in particular, to regulate (with help) the two principal annual national club competitions. Please!
Help with the weekly newsletter will also be welcome. Email newsletter@offshoot.ie if you want to help.
Shoot With Me Success Story
The Shoot With Me Showcase sessions in November and December illustrate beyond words the extent of the talent among our members. That talent was expressed in some superb images and demonstrated, once again, the enjoyment by the members of the Shoot With Me teams in their participation.
The Shoot With Me concept, unique to Offshoot, is always popular and never fails to unite members for both photographic excellence and the ‘craic’.
So now it's time to start thinking about our SWM projects for the Spring programme in 2024. Pat Divilly has 11 leaders and will start rolling out invitations to join a team, so watch your email and apply for a topic of your choice as soon as the starting gun is fired (metaphorically speaking).
Time to join the 2024 Photo Challenge (24PC)
The 2024 Photo Challenge is now open for entries.
Remember, you decide on the theme, and you have until the end of September to shoot your photos for that theme. You can present up to 20 images or a max of 10 minutes of AV on your chosen theme to your fellow club members in October.
So, decide on your theme now and submit it with your name to 24PC@offshoot.ie before the end of January.
If you have any questions on the process, contact Gerry Donovan at the same email. |
